Winding through Putnam County from the northeast to the southwest corner, Big Walnut Creek flows under four of the nine historic covered bridges and through its 2,600-acre namesake, the Big Walnut Natural Area in the northeast portion of the county.
Built in 1952, this man-made reservoir was the first of its kind in Indiana, created for flood protection in the Eel and White River watersheds. Spanning 1,400 acres, it is the heart of water activity in Putnam County.
If fishing floats your boat, the 371-acre, fully-stocked Glenn Flint Lake is your northern Putnam County destination for largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, spunky panfish, and channel catfish.
A 316-acre, private lake in northeastern Putnam County, Heritage Lake offers a private community setting with summer events, a camping area and a restaurant.
Briefly described as a canoe and kayak launch, Portland Mills is a gorgeous put-in for Cecil M. Harden Lake at Raccoon State Recreation Area. Straddling the line between Putnam and Parke counties, this ramp is open for non-motorized watercraft.
The smallest open body of water in the county, Van Bibber is a public lake in an unincorporated community of fewer than 500 residents.
