BIG WALNUT BIRD CLUB

More than 100 bird species nest in Putnam County, and the Big Walnut Bird Club has followed them weekly for decades. The club maintains a steady membership of around 25, with an occasional newsletter, oftentimes weekly walks, field trips, and the Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the Audubon Society.

All kinds of terrain and natural environments in this area where prehistoric glaciers melted, historic covered bridges, nature preserves and interesting and unique rural destinations make bike riding popular here.

NATIONAL ROAD HERITAGE TRAIL

Launched in 2004, the National Road Heritage Trail, Inc. supports development of a multi-use trail spanning Indiana. From the Illinois state line east to the Ohio state line, the trail traces the former Pennsylvania and Vandalia rail corridors, where possible, closely following the Historic National Road, now US-40.

PUTNAM COUNTY MURAL PROJECT

The leader of the group behind the Putnam County Mural Project, an initiative to enhance community pride and to visually illustrate life here, said, “We believe murals have the ability to transform communities by celebrating heritage, creating civic pride and enriching lives through participatory art-making,”

PUTNAM PICKLEBALL PLAYERS

60+ Members strong, the Putnam Pickleball Players encompass a wide range of talent and age, as the sport is intended. Playing mostly at the Robe Ann Park sports complex, this group meets regularly for weekly play and hosts larger annual tournaments.
