Once called Webster Bridge, taking its name from the nearby Webster Mill and Brewery along Mill Creek, the name changed to recognize the Huffman family which owned several farms along Mill Creek. Located south of Reelsville, the Dick Huffman is the longest bridge in Putnam County, spanning 265’ across Big Walnut Creek.
Built roughly around the same time as the Houck Covered Bridge in the 1880s, the Dick Huffman is a two-span, Howe Truss bridge, meaning, instead of an arch, the truss uses posts in the shape of an X down each side of the bridge, with metal posts where the lumber crosses on each side. The Howe Truss was the first trust patent to use metal in covered bridge construction.
Directions: Starting from the Putnam County Courthouse head south on Jackson Street, which will turn into Manhattan Road. Turn right onto US-40, heading west, then take an immediate left, heading south on South County Road 450 West. Turn right, heading west onto West County Road 950 South. At the Big Walnut Missionary Baptist Church, turn left and head south on South County Road 550 West. When you reach the “T,” turn right and head west. Continue until you reach the Covered Bridge.
