In 1934, the city and local outdoor recreation enthusiasts began planning the park. Two years later, the Indiana High School Athletic Association assisted with building its first major facility – a softball diamond.
To facilitate further park development and maintenance, the Greencastle Board of Park Commissioners was created in 1937. In 1956, Robe-Ann Park’s role as a significant component of the Greencastle municipal structure was formally recognized with a City Council ordinance that established the Greencastle Parks & Recreation Department.
Over the next 50 years, the board, department and the Friends of the Park Association of Putnam County, Inc. developed facilities in the 25-acre park that include the basketball and lighted tennis courts and ball diamond, picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, paved pathways, the Greencastle Aquatics Center in 1992 – with an Olympic-size swimming pool with water slide and diving well, Castle Playground in 1995, modern restrooms in 1996, the Emerald Palace Super Playground and GPRD Administrative Office and Maintenance Building in 2001, the Putnam County Skatepark in 2003, the Bob York Memorial Splash Park in 2014, six pickleball courts in 2016, and a stunning band shelter at the foot of a natural amphitheater in 2018.
The venue is home to softball leagues, concerts and shows, 5K races, regional pickleball tournaments, the county’s longstanding “Celebrate 4” Independence Day fireworks celebration; ParkFest, the 14-week free summer concert series; and the annual Winter Wonderland Holiday Lights Festival among hundreds of park programs and family and civic celebrations and events year-round.
